Resilience in Interpreting: Navigating Challenges and Sustaining Excellence
In the field of interpreting, resilience is a critical skill that allows professionals to navigate high-stakes situations, handle emotional and cognitive demands, and maintain quality under pressure. This talk explores the concept of resilience within the interpreting profession, examining strategies that interpreters can use to thrive in the face of challenges, whether they are working in medical, legal, or community settings. We will delve into practical tools for managing stress, building mental and emotional stamina, and developing a growth mindset to stay adaptable in a rapidly evolving field. Participants will learn actionable techniques for self-care, emotional regulation, and setting boundaries, as well as ways to cultivate resilience as part of their professional practice.
Eliane Sfeir-Markus, CHI, is a highly experienced interpreter, trainer, and industry leader, fluent in Arabic, English, and French, and a native Arabic speaker. She is a is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter and court certified interpreter in the states of Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Currently an Interpreter Expert at Language Services Associates (LSA), Eliane provides high-level advisement on industry standards, develops training materials, and offers essential guidance on interpreting ethics and best practices. She represents LSA at client meetings and industry events, leveraging her knowledge to resolve complex client inquiries and enhance service quality. A thought leader in interpreter training, Eliane also creates social media content on best practices, boosting interpreter engagement and professional development.
In her role as an Interpreter Trainer with De La Mora Institute, Eliane co-designed and teaches a rigorous "Train the Trainer" course. Her training portfolio includes medical and court interpreter programs, along with webinars on professional development topics like cultural intelligence. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Widener University Delaware Law School, where she introduces students to court interpreting and teaches foundational interpreting skills.
As the owner of LTTI Services, LLC, Eliane provides interpretation services, training, and quality assurance. A certified John Maxwell Leadership coach, Eliane blends her expertise in communication with leadership training, enhancing the resilience and professional growth of interpreters nationwide.
Eliane has served as President of the Delaware Valley Translators Association (DVTA) and remains an active member of NAJIT, ATA, and NCIHC, consistently contributing to the interpreting profession through her leadership, training, and advocacy for high standards in language services.

In this engaging session, Maria Ceballos-Wallis shares valuable insights gained from hosting the podcast Subject to Interpretation. Through conversations with seasoned interpretation experts, she’s uncovered critical lessons and best practices that enhance understanding in the field of interpretation. Attendees will gain a unique behind-the-scenes look at the challenges, growth opportunities, and key takeaways that have shaped her journey as a host and interpreter.
Maria Ceballos-Wallis, FCCI, GA MLCI, FL CCI & CHI Spanish, is a highly experienced Federally Certified Court Interpreter and Master License Legal Spanish-English Court Interpreter for Georgia and Florida. She has worked extensively in State, Federal, and Immigration Courts, and served as a staff interpreter at DeKalb County State Court from 2011 to 2024.
Maria holds an M.A. in international studies and a B.A. in communication arts with a minor in French. She has a strong background in multilingual communication, having taught at Miami Dade Community College, Florida International University, and De La Mora Institute of Interpretation.
A dedicated advocate for the interpreting profession, Maria co-founded InterpretADR and developed "Foundations in Conflict Resolution and ADR for Interpreters," the first online training of its kind. She also hosts the audio and video podcast "Subject to Interpretation," where she interviews industry experts on topics relevant to professional interpreters.
