Everything You Need to Know about Special Immigrant Juvenile Status in State Courts
Live Online Monthly Webinar
[Legal]
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) is a unique immigration remedy that straddles federal and state law, because it requires applicants to first obtain a state court order with particular findings before applying for federal immigration benefits. Although in many states, SIJS is handled almost exclusively in family courts, these cases can also be filed in probate, juvenile, or any court division that handles matters involving the custody and care of minors. This session will explore the variety of settings in which interpreters may find themselves interpreting for a SIJS case, and will present terminology and procedural issues that the interpreter may encounter, as well as discussing SIJS as an immigration remedy for abused, abandoned, and neglected minors.
