Webinar Description

[Education]

Being able to intervene appropriately is a necessary skill in the toolbox of an interpreter.  However, there is a fine line between intervening and interfering. During this workshop, we will practice intervening without interfering while performing consecutive interpretation. We will apply critical thinking to decide when we should or shouldn’t intervene and how. We will discuss the questions “when is an interpreter actually interfering?” and “what are the considerations that should be taken before intervening?” We will analyze the three principles of AAITE code of ethics (accuracy, impartiality and professional conduct), and examine how interpreters abide by these principles while intervening. This workshop is a rundown of what interpreters should replicate in their lab while practicing. “The Art of Intervening Without Interfering” will help interpreters sharpen their skills in consecutive interpreting, develop the phraseology necessary to intervene, and learn the criteria for deciding when to intervene.

Register now to strengthen your decision-making and intervention skills in educational interpreting.

Key Takeaways:

  • Participants will be able to distinguish clearly between appropriate intervention and interference in educational interpreting settings.

  • Participants will apply critical thinking to determine when intervention is necessary and justify their decisions based on context and ethical standards.

  • Participants will demonstrate effective and professional phraseology for intervening during consecutive interpreting.

  • Participants will analyze interpreting scenarios using the principles of accuracy, impartiality, and professional conduct from the AAITE Code of Ethics.

  • Participants will integrate intervention strategies into their practice routines to strengthen performance in consecutive interpreting.
