This intensive 12-hour course is specifically designed to help Arabic interpreters develop the skills necessary to excel in the state court oral certification exam. The course focuses on enhancing language proficiency, mastering legal terminology, and applying effective interpreting techniques, all while adhering to the highest ethical standards.

Course Objectives

  • Build advanced proficiency in both spoken and written Arabic for legal settings.

  • Familiarize participants with essential legal terminology and courtroom procedures.

  • Develop effective note-taking and memory techniques for consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.

  • Practice real-life interpreting scenarios to build confidence and accuracy.

Course Content

  • Introduction to Legal Interpretation

    Introduces the structure of the state court oral exam and highlights the importance of deliberate practice in developing interpreting skills.

  • Legal Terminology and Procedures

    Covers essential legal vocabulary in Arabic and English while reviewing courtroom procedures and interpreter protocols.

  • Interpreting Techniques

    Covers consecutive interpretation with note-taking and memory strategies, simultaneous interpretation through techniques and practice, and includes feedback and analysis to target areas for improvement.

Certified Interpreter

Eliane Sfeir-Markus, CHI, is an experienced interpreter, trainer, and industry leader fluent in Arabic, English, and French. She is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter and court-certified interpreter in Pennsylvania and Delaware. As an Interpreter Expert), Eliane advises on industry standards, develops training materials, and provides guidance on interpreting ethics and best practices. Additionally, as an Adjunct Professor at Widener University Delaware Law School, Eliane teaches court and medical interpreting and foundational interpreting skills. Eliane is also a trainer with De La Mora Institute, where she co-designed and teaches a "Train the Trainer" course. She offers training in medical and court interpreting and webinars on professional development topics like cultural intelligence. She is a certified John Maxwell Leadership coach and speaker.
