Language-neutral introduction to commonly used phrases, terms and forms for immigration interpreters

Immigration law by far has the most demand for our services and presents unique challenges. It is difficult to overestimate the role of interpreters in such a complicated process. It requires not only superior interpretation (and translation) skills in all modes, thorough knowledge of legal and immigration processes and jargons, but also familiarity with political movements, religions and ethnic realities, history and current conditions. We are not mere conduits, but a link between the LEPs and a complex immigration system. While legal representation safeguards their interests in court, proper interpretation guarantees their inclusion in the process instead of mere observation. The Court and the Government (DHS, or Department) benefit from our services as well: from impeachment or cross-examination to delivery of the Final Order-all of which require proper interpreting.

Meet the Presenter

Olga Dubeshka

Olga Dubeshka is a dually certified medical interpreter (CCHI and NBCMI-RU) and a proud member of the National Language Service Corps (NLSC). A graduate of Minsk State Linguistic University, she has called South Florida home for nearly 20 years—an area whose rich multicultural makeup has shaped and inspired her interpreting career. For over a decade, she has provided language services at every stage of the immigration process, including work with ICE, CBP, the USCIS Asylum Office, and the DOJ/EOIR as a Russian contract interpreter. She also volunteers alongside fellow interpreters for nonprofit organizations such as Respond: Crisis Translation and Border Butterflies.
