Webinar Description

This presentation will include immigration court ethics and protocol, some background about EOIR (Executive Office of Immigration Review), the role of the interpreter in this environment as well as information regarding the different immigration court hearing settings, for example, cancellation of removal, adjustments, asylum, withholding of deportation, protection under the UN Convention Against Torture or CAT, pre- and post-conclusive voluntary departures, citizenship claims, etc.

We will take a look at the different scenarios and the role of the interpreter in Immigration (civil proceedings) and Federal and State criminal court proceedings. Additionally, we'll explore language differences or similarities of standard legal terminology vs. immigration jargon, and the importance of cultural awareness in translation.

The session will also cover the relationship between the court (EOIR), the Department of Homeland Security (the attorneys who represent the government), US Citizens and Immigration Service (USCIS) and Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE).

Participants will receive information regarding monolingual (English) and bilingual (Spa<>Eng) glossaries of terms associated with immigration as well as a list of the definitions of the different sections of the law for EOIR (Executive Office of Immigration Review).
