Interpreting for the Deaf Juror

This seminar will discuss the background and history of deaf jurors and the current industry standards and business practices for ASL interpreters hired to work jury duty. The presenter will delineate the historical case law progression permitting deaf citizens to serve on petit juries. The seminar will address the perception of ASL interpreter from the court’s perspective, the consumer's perspective and discuss the ethical challenges presented. Participants will explore the procedure used from selecting a jury during voir dire to the challenges posed while interpreting deliberations. The class will explore the interpreter's role, function and duties as a jury duty interpreter, and specific preparation strategies. Participants will be able to practice interpreting orientation to jury service texts and commonly encountered preliminary and final jury instructions.
Pre-requisite: ASL certification required. NIC at any level, or older RID certifications accepted
Participants will be able to state the five (5) traditional arguments used to challenge deaf jurors from a jury panel, based on case law.
Participants will be able to articulate the similarities and differences in the role of a court interpreter versus an interpreter in the deliberation room.
Participants will examine and defend ethical decisions from common scenarios gathered from actual jury duty interpreting.
Participants will be able to state at least two (2) strategies for obtaining preparation information when a panel is called to a courtroom.
Participants will demonstrate an appreciation of the terminology used in typical jury instructions through small group interpreting of actual jury instructions.

If recordings are made of the event, these recordings will only be made available to those approved by the event sponsor to take the course, as a reference material for review for a limited amount of time.
