Interpreting for Deaf Witnesses

This seminar will define trial procedure as it relates to interpreting. With a focus on witness testimony, consecutive interpreting and notetaking, the class will engage in both theory and practical application of techniques and strategies for effective legal interpreting. The seminar will present evidence from research in the field of sign language interpreting demonstrating the effectiveness of each mode or interpreting. Participants will engage in intra-language exercises for notetaking in a legal setting, and then engage in practice activities using consecutive interpreting including notetaking. The seminar will explore various methods of notetaking with team interpreting techniques.
Pre-requisite: ASL certification required. NIC at any level, or older RID certifications accepted
Participants will be able to articulate the definition of consecutive interpretation and state the various settings in which it can be indicated.
Participants will be able to define the discourse strategies used by attorneys during witness questioning.
Participants will be able to define at least 4 categories of discourse strategies used in ASL to interpret for deaf witnesses.
Participants will be able to explain the similarities and differences between the use of consecutive interpreting and notetaking within the ASL legal interpreting field and the spoken language interpreting field.
Participants will demonstrate integration of the information presented through intra- and interlingual consecutive interpreting practice and memory activities.

Comments and opinions shared within the class setting will not be published or made available to anyone outside of the original registrants, event coordinators, and those approved by the event sponsor to take the course. If recordings are made of the event, these recordings will only be made available to those approved by the event sponsor to take the course, as a reference material for review for a limited amount of time.
