Implementing the Work of the Interpreter at Counsel Table: A Pragmatic Approach

Dates: April 12-13, 2025 9 am - 4 pm ET
This advanced seminar equips interpreters with the skills to serve as counsel-table interpreters. Participants will analyze interpreted legal texts, identify substantive errors, and learn how to notify counsel in a minimally disruptive manner. Ethical frameworks and protocols for this role will also be discussed.

For the Record: Presenting Yourself and Issues to the Court Effectively

Dates: June 28-29, 2025 9 am - 4 pm ET
This seminar focuses on how interpreters can present their credentials and ethical issues to the court. Participants will practice using logical reasoning models and gain confidence in presenting scenarios and credentials during mock activities. The session includes case law analysis and ethical decision-making.

Interpreting for Deaf Witnesses

Dates: September 13-14, 2025 9 am - 4 pm ET

Participants will explore trial procedures with a focus on consecutive interpreting and notetaking for deaf witnesses. The course combines theory with hands-on practice, including intra-language exercises and team interpreting techniques. Research evidence on interpreting modes will be presented.

Understanding Attorney Strategy and Evidentiary Rules for ASL Interpreters

Dates: October 18-19, 2025 9 am - 4 pm ET

This course helps interpreters understand legal discourse strategies, evidentiary rules, and attorney objectives during direct and cross-examinations. Participants will analyze courtroom discourse samples, classify legal strategies, and practice applying these concepts in real-life scenarios.

Interpreting for the Deaf Juror

Dates: November 1-2, 2025 9 am - 4 pm ET

This seminar covers the history of deaf jurors and current practices for interpreters in jury duty. Participants will review case law, discuss ethical challenges, and practice interpreting jury instructions. Procedures for voir dire and deliberation room interpreting will also be explored.

Comments and opinions shared within the class setting will not be published or made available to anyone outside of the original registrants, event coordinators, and those approved by the event sponsor to take the course. If recordings are made of the event, these recordings will only be made available to those approved by the event sponsor to take the course, as a reference material for review for a limited amount of time.
