Implementing the Work of the Interpreter at Counsel Table: A Pragmatic Approach
Starting April 12th, 2025!
Live Online Training
This advanced seminar is designed to provide interpreters with a practical understanding of the three areas necessary to serve in the role of counsel-table interpreter: Participants will (1) be instructed in a model of miscue analysis, (2) use that model to analyze interpreted legal texts, and (3) practice bringing substantive errors to the attention of counsel in the least disruptive manner. Participants will examine and discuss a proposed framework of ethics and protocol for carrying out the duties of a table interpreter.
Pre-requisite: ASL certification required. NIC at any level, or older RID certifications accepted
Participants will be able to articulate the 5 types of errors from the Cokely framework for discussing errors.
Participants will analyze a miscue for substantiality, balancing it against the effect of the intrusion caused by the interpreter interrupting the proceedings to inform the court, through counsel, of the miscue.
Participants will be able to articulate the principles underlying a consensus framework for the protocol and ethics of working as a table interpreter.
